Computer won't turn on?

First, double check that there is power to the area you are in, switching on a screen, a fan or other electrical device, power trips do happen and the lights and wall sockets are often on separate fuses.

On a Laptop

There could be many reasons why it will not turn on, check the following:

1

Check to see if the power adapter has an LED Light, does it light up when plugged in?

If no, the adapter may be faulty or the power socket is not providing power.

2

Next, plug the adapter into the laptop, check to see if there is any charging light on the device. Try to switch it on after this.

3

Unplug all USB Devices and docking stations. Try to switch it on again.

4

Depending on the model of laptop, it might be possible to remove the battery, unplug the power adapter and remove the battery, leave it for 1 minute then re-insert the battery carefully and the power cable. Then try switching it on.

Laptops are fairly fragile and it is common for issues to develop. It is important to make sure you back up your data on a regular basis.

On a desktop

There is a difference between an all in one (Apple imac) and a more traditional desktop & monitor combination. Make sure that you are switching on both the monitor and the desktop.

1

Look at the back of the desktop tower, check to see if there is a light on the power supply. Sometimes there is a power switch which needs to be set to on.

2

Try a different power lead if there is a spare available, the fuse might have gone in the plug.

3

Unplug all USB Devices and docking stations. Try to switch it on again.
